TUM鈥檚 immediate action program for refugees from crisis regions

91桃色 (TUM) is offering refugees who had already started or were about to start programs of study in their countries of origin the chance to attend courses at TUM as part of an immediate action program. Starting this October, they will be able to audit (sit in on) course modules in German or English. This program serves as an opportunity for the refugees to familiarize themselves with the German higher education system. Moreover, Students from TUM will be assisting the new arrivals at the university.<br /><br />

鈥淎lthough we are again expecting a record number of new students this winter semester, with over 12,000 registrations, we as an international university want to support refugees from crisis regions in finding a new academic home and acquiring new skills and qualifications. Timely help is doubly effective. Therefore we are opening our winter semester offerings to candidates who can be expected to succeed in their studies. They will be supported by student mentors who will receive special training. Thus our contribution in the current situation is targeted symmetrically in two directions: We are helping refugees and also preparing future leaders of our society for the challenges associated with the integration of the refugees,鈥� explains TUM President, Wolfgang A. Herrmann.

Refugees will receive advice and support from TUM鈥檚 Student Service Center (SSZ). While auditing courses, they will also have access to TUM鈥檚 service offerings and facilities. What鈥檚 more, TUM students will act as mentors in collaboration with the university to offer the refugees individual support.

Student mentors will receive special intercultural training on how to support the refugees and promote integration. This mentoring program will furthermore help to integrate the new arrivals into campus life at the university, with activities such as group trips and sports activities with TUM students.

Those who are interested in the immediate action program can find out more on 30 September, 2015 from 10 a.m. to noon at TUM .
Information will be provided in German and English.

We will be answering questions such as

  • How does the higher education system work in Germany?
  • What courses of study are available at TUM?
  • What requirements must I fulfill to audit a course and how can I apply?
  • How can I find the right course for me?

Individual advising will be available at this event, as well as information on other TUM support services for refugees 鈥� and of course, there will be time to get to know students from the university.

This immediate action program is aimed at refugees who had already begun or were about to start a program of study in their country of origin. Sufficient knowledge of German or English is required.
